Have you ever wondered for your Google document, how to add in that additional wider page, in other words – landscape instead of the normal (portrait) page?
Portrait vs Landscape
First things first – making sure we’re on the same page (no pun intended).
The image below explains (hopefully clearly), the difference between the two standard orientations.
Why Portrait and Landscape?
When it was popular to have paintings created, it was normal to have a person’s picture (or portrait) painted to see more than just their head. They needed the canvas higher than wider to include more of the upper part of the body.
For pictures of nature, it was most often sweeping images, which need space horizontally. This showed more of the landscape in the painting.
Now you know why we use these phrases to explain the layout of the page (or phone).
Why change the orientation of a page in your document?
There are times that you want/need to include information that needs more space on the page – i.e. that you want to to be landscape.
Now you could have it in a new file, but that means that any page numbering will be wrong. If you’re printing the file(s) out then you need to to remember to add the extra page.
OK – there are a few reasons to have the page included with your document and file.
Insert a landscape page into the file
You’ll be unsurprised to learn that there are a few ways you could do this:
Something to note – you can only change the orientation (portrait or landscape) for a page.
Add a new page and change the orientation
My first option is to create a new page, change it to landscape and finally add my diagram in.
Start with a new page:
Under Insert, add in a page break, which puts me at the start of a new page. But to get a whole page add a second page break.
Now I have a blank page, which I want to change to landscape.
Highlight the blank page – the blank space that’s there.
Go into the File Menu and Page Setup. This is the option for orientation, I can change it from portrait to landscape.
Is the ‘Apply to’ setting showing as ‘selected content’?
Note: The other option is Whole Document, and we only want a single page to change.
Next, select ‘Landscape’ in the Orientation section and click OK.
The page is now ‘sideways’, scroll up and down your document – the rest of the pages are still portrait.
Note: You may have another page added – this can just be deleted.
Paste in your graphic / image/ chart and resize it (if needed) information.
Now you’ve got a landscape page in a portrait document.
Add the content and make it landscape
Option number two – paste the diagram (image) in, into its own page.
Back into File > Page Setup.
Check that it’s ‘selected content’, click landscape and say OK.
It will change the page orientation, but there’s a good chance that it will add in another page – which I’ll need to delete.
