Recording Zoom allows you to have ‘perfect recall’ of your meetings – what was said and agreed. It means that you can return back to it again and again to re-watch/refresh your memory of the discussion.
Tip #1 – Get permission before you start recording
OK – this may seem obvious, but it’s worth repeating. Start the Zoom meeting, then ask people if it’s OK to record it and explain what will be done with the recording.
Hopefully, most people will agree – but there will be people who say no. In that case, you’ve got a few options – a) ask if they are OK to have their voice recorded – in which case ask them to switch off the video, b) politely ask them to leave the meeting, or c) don’t record it.
Note: If you can share that the meeting will be recorded when you send invites out, giving people notice and time to make a decision. Then, at the beginning of the meeting ask again.
Where is it recorded?
This section is talking about storing recordings and uses computer storage acronyms – if you’re not sure what about them take a look at Do you know your Bits and Bytes?
Part of the answer depends on the type of account that you have.
Free accounts
Being the basic version, you don’t have a choice – recordings are stored locally.
Tip #2 – Check that you’ve got space for the recording! You may be wondering how much space you need – sorry, I can’t give you specifics.
It’s going to depend on how long the meeting is, how much is shared (videos, screen sharing). My short videos so far: 2 mins = 17Mb, 4 mins = 10Mb, 7 mins = 14Mb.
Paid accounts
If you are using a paid account (Pro, Enterprise or Education), then you will have a choice for recordings to be stored locally, or in the cloud.
Cloud means that it doesn’t take up space on your local drive, and it can be shared with other people.
Tip #3 – You will need to enable cloud recording on your account. To permanently change it log into your Zoom dashboard through a web browser, or when you press record you’ll be asked where to save it – Cloud or Local.
The Pro/Business accounts comes with 1Gb of cloud storage. Education accounts include 500Mb (0.5Gb). You can of course, purchase more space if needed.
Where is the Record Button?
Depending on how you have Zoom displayed (full screen or a smaller window) the Record button might be on screen.
However, it might not be.
If you can’t see Record (either option) then click on More, to display the additional options.
One Final Tip
Tip #4 – Use shortcut keys to save time
You can see all of the Zoom shortcut keys in my handout (including the ones for recording) – available to purchase now!
