One of the most common questions I’m hearing these days is straightforward but critical: what happens if I choose to stay on Windows 10 rather than upgrading to Windows 11? With Microsoft’s support for Win 10 ending in October 2025, it’s a decision many users and businesses are facing. Let me break down the facts to help you make an informed choice.
Can You Actually Stay on Windows 10?
The simple answer is yes. Microsoft cannot force you to upgrade your operating system.
If you choose to remain on Windows 10, your computer will continue to function as normal—at least initially. Your programmes will still run, and your system will boot up just fine.
However, be prepared for so many messages, that you’ll get sick of them. As Microsoft to send frequent notifications encouraging you to upgrade, reminding you that your current OS is out of support.
The Extended Security Update Programme
Microsoft is offering an Extended Security Update (ESU) programme for those who need more time before upgrading. Here’s how it works:
For Consumers:
- A one-off fee of $30 (at the time of writing)
- Covers security updates for a single year
For Businesses:
- A three-year subscription model
- First year: $61 per device
- Second year: $122 per device (doubles)
- Third year: $244 per device (doubles again)
Is the ESU worth it? Perhaps, if you need additional time to implement an upgrade plan. For businesses with complex systems to test and roll out, it might provide a valuable buffer period. But it’s certainly not a permanent solution.
The Real Cost of Staying on Windows 10
Beyond the potential cost if you join the ESU programme, there are several major downsides to remaining on an unsupported operating system:
Security Vulnerabilities
Without regular security updates from Microsoft, your system becomes increasingly vulnerable to cyber attacks. While your firewall and antivirus will continue to function, they can’t compensate completely for an unsupported operating system.
Declining Performance
Your computer will gradually slow down without performance improvements and optimisations. This performance decline affects not just the operating system but potentially your applications as well.
Software Compatibility Issues
Eventually, software developers will stop supporting Windows 10. You’ll find that:
- Updates for your everyday applications may stop be available
- You might not be able to install the latest versions of your applications
- New software may not be compatible with Windows 10 at all
Is Staying on Windows 10 a Viable Option?
As a long-term solution? Definitely not. All devices eventually become obsolete, and when you eventually purchase new hardware, it will come with Windows 11 pre-installed.
As a short-term stopgap? Perhaps. If you need more time to prepare for the transition or have a migration plan that extends beyond October 2025, staying on Windows 10 temporarily might make sense.
The Decision Is Yours
Whether you choose to stay on Windows 10, upgrade to Windows 11, or even move away from Microsoft operating systems altogether is ultimately your decision. I hope this information helps you weigh the pros and cons effectively.
Remember that planning ahead is always better than reacting to a crisis. If you’re considering staying on Windows 10 beyond the support deadline, ensure you have robust security measures in place and a clear timeline for your eventual upgrade.
