Have you ever noticed a notification in Microsoft Teams telling you there’s an unread message, but no matter where you look, you just can’t track it down? You’re not alone — it’s one of those small but genuinely frustrating things that can eat up your time. The good news is there’s a really simple way to find unread messages in Microsoft Teams, and once you know about it, you’ll wonder how you ever managed without it.
The Problem With Hunting for Unread Messages
When you’re running a small business, every minute counts. Scrolling through a long list of chats and channels trying to spot the bold text of an unread message is not a great use of your time. Thankfully, MS Teams has a built-in filter that does the hard work for you.
Meet the Unread Button
Head over to the Chat section in Teams — you’ll find it in the left-hand navigation bar. Look at the top left corner of the chat panel, and just underneath the word “Chat” you’ll see a button that simply says Unread.
That’s it. That’s your new best friend.

How to Use It
Just click the Unread button and Teams will instantly filter your view to show only the chats and channels that have unread messages. Everything else disappears from the list temporarily, leaving you with just the conversations that need your attention.
Click on whichever chat or channel appears, and you’ll go straight to there and (hopefully) the new and unread message is displayed.
Either way MS Teams will think you’ve seen it and now mark it as read. Job done.

There’s a Keyboard Shortcut Too
If you’re a fan of keyboard shortcuts (I am, though I’ll admit I still reach for the mouse for this option!), you can also use Ctrl + Alt + U to toggle the Unread filter on and off.
One Small Thing to Remember
If you’ve read a message but Teams doesn’t seem to be marking it as read, don’t panic. Simply click somewhere else in Teams and then come back to it — that usually does the trick.
And when you’re finished reviewing your unread messages, remember to click the Unread button again to switch the filter off. Otherwise you’ll be staring at a very short chat list wondering where everything went!

Give It a Try
Next time you see that unread notification and can’t figure out where it’s hiding, hit that Unread button. It takes one click and finds the message instantly. Simple, fast, and genuinely useful — especially when you’re juggling everything that comes with running your own business.
If you’d like to see this in action, I’ve put together a short video walkthrough over on my YouTube channel. Pop the kettle on — it’ll take less time than that. You’ll find the link in the YouTube Videos section below.
