If you’re wondering whether your Windows 10 device can handle an upgrade to Windows 11, you’re not alone. This question is on many people’s minds as Microsoft announced the need to upgrade to its newest operating system. Fortunately, there’s a simple built-in tool that can give you a definitive answer in just a few clicks – PC Health Check app.
The PC Health Check Tool: Your Windows 11 Compatibility Assistant
One of the first questions you might be asking yourself is, “Is my Windows 10 device actually capable of being upgraded to Windows 11?” Microsoft has thoughtfully included a handy tool to help you determine this with minimal fuss.
The PC Health Check app is designed to compare your system against the requirements for Windows 11 and give you an immediate verdict on compatibility. Here’s how to use it:
- Click on your Windows search bar in the taskbar
- Type in “PC Health” (you don’t even need to type the full “PC Health Check”)
- Open the app when it appears in the search results
- Look for the “Introducing Windows 11” section
- Click the “Check now” button
The tool will quickly scan your system, checking against all Windows 11 requirements including processor type, TPM version, RAM, storage space, and other specifications.
TPM stands for “Trusted Platform Module.”
It’s a hardware-based security component that’s built into many modern computers.
The TPM is a specialised chip on your computer’s motherboard that provides hardware-based security functions. Its primary purposes include:
- Secure storage of encryption keys: The TPM can securely store cryptographic keys used for features like BitLocker drive encryption.
- Hardware authentication: It helps verify that your hardware hasn’t been tampered with between system boots.
- Protection against firmware attacks: TPM helps prevent certain types of low-level attacks that target your system before the operating system loads.
Understanding Your Results
After the scan completes, you’ll immediately see one of two results:
- This PC meets Windows 11 requirements – Congratulations! Your device is ready for the upgrade when you are.
- This PC doesn’t meet Windows 11 requirements – Your current hardware falls short of what’s needed.
For a more detailed breakdown, click “See all results” to identify exactly which requirements your PC meets and which ones it doesn’t. This information is invaluable if you’re considering hardware upgrades to make your system Windows 11 compatible.
Why Compatibility Matters
Microsoft has raised the bar for system requirements with Windows 11, emphasising security features like TPM 2.0 and newer generation processors. These requirements aren’t just arbitrary hurdles—they ensure your system can handle the enhanced security features and performance improvements that Windows 11 delivers.
Next Steps
Once you know whether your PC is compatible, you can make an informed decision:
- If compatible: Plan your upgrade timeline and backup your important files before proceeding.
- If not compatible: Consider whether hardware upgrades are feasible or whether it might be time to invest in a new system.
Either way, the PC Health Check tool provides the clarity you need without requiring technical expertise or guesswork.
Stay Updated
Windows requirements and upgrade paths can change as Microsoft releases updates. I recommend running the PC Health Check tool periodically if you’re planning to upgrade in the future but aren’t ready just yet.
