It’s time to address something crucial that will affect millions of computer users worldwide: Windows 10 end of support is happening on 14 October 2025.
What End of Support Actually Means
The date is set in stone. Come 14 October 2025, Microsoft will stop providing free software updates, technical assistance, and—most critically—security fixes for Windows 10. While your PC won’t suddenly stop functioning, it will become increasingly vulnerable as time passes.
I cannot stress this enough: continuing to use an unsupported operating system is like leaving your front door unlocked in a high-crime neighbourhood. It’s not a question of if you’ll experience problems, but when.
The Real-World Implications
When I discuss this with clients, I emphasise three major consequences:
- Security Vulnerabilities: Without regular security patches, your device becomes susceptible to new malware, ransomware, and other cyber threats. Hackers actively target unsupported systems, knowing they’re no longer defended against the latest attack methods.
- Technical Support Disappears: Should you encounter issues with your Windows 10 installation, Microsoft’s help channels will no longer be available to assist you.
- Feature Stagnation: Your Windows experience will remain frozen in time, with no new features or improvements offered or installed.
Your Available Options
I recommend considering these pathways forward:
Option 1: Upgrade to Windows 11
Microsoft’s preferred solution is upgrading to Windows 11, which offers enhanced security features, a modernised interface, and ongoing support. I’ve found the transition relatively smooth for compatible hardware, though it does require meeting specific system requirements.
Option 2: Extended Security Updates (ESU)
For those who cannot immediately upgrade, Microsoft offers an Extended Security Updates programme:
- Commercial customers can receive security updates for an additional year post-end-of-support
- Individual consumers can purchase a year of basic protection for £23 (approximately $30)
Taking Action: My Recommendations
Based on my experience helping others through similar transitions, I suggest:
- Check your device’s Windows 11 compatibility using Microsoft’s PC Health Check app
- Backup all your important documents, photos, and files
- Develop a clear upgrade timeline well before October 2025
- If upgrading isn’t feasible, budget for either a new device or the ESU programme
The Bottom Line
I’ve witnessed the aftermath of using unsupported operating systems, and it rarely ends well. While your Windows 10 computer won’t become a paperweight overnight, the security risks increase exponentially with each passing month after support ends.
Don’t wait until it’s too late. Your digital security deserves priority attention. Whether you choose to upgrade to Windows 11, purchase extended support, or invest in new hardware, addressing this change proactively will save you significant headaches down the road.
